Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located numerous other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police say initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.

City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.

An important political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved promptly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
