Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
